Toxic exposure in America: estimating fetal and infant health outcomes from 14 years of TRI reporting.

We examine the effect of exposure to a set of toxic pollutants that are tracked by the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) from manufacturing facilities on county-level infant and fetal mortality rates in the United States between 1989 and 2002. Unlike previous studies, we control for toxic pollution from both mobile sources and non-TRI reporting facilities. We find significant adverse effects of tox...

Urban Air Pollution Exposure – Measurement, Modeling and Assessment

Exposure to air pollution in city centers is of major concern because of its health-risks to urban dwellers, trafficcorridor users and even to in-transit commuters. The steady growth in traffic is the major source of toxic air pollutants in urban centers these days. Therefore, studying exposure to air pollutants in urban centers is of special interests to environmental health scientists. This s...

Environmental exposure, social class, and cancer risk.

Exposure to a variety of environmental factors associated with cancer occurrence varies by social class. These factors include air pollutants (SO2, NO2, total suspended particulates, etc.), toxic waste hazards, and ionizing and other radiation. Heavy environmental pollution has been associated with an increased risk of some cancers and in particular lung cancer. There is limited evidence sugges...

Oxidative stress: its role in air pollution and adverse health effects.

Increasing concern exists over the adverse effects of air pollution on human health. Epidemiological studies have shown a clear association between cardiovascular morbidity, decreased lung function, increased hospital admissions, mortality, and airborne concentrations of photochemical and particulate pollutants. Human exposure chamber studies of specific pollutants have shown that short term ex...

Serum Persistent Organic Pollutants

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are manmade organic chemicals that remain in the environment for years or decades. POPs are of special concern because they often remain toxic for decades or longer after release to the environment. The more persistent a toxic chemical is, the greater the probability for human exposure over time. Because they circulate globally long after being released into...
